Mindanao Pride: MSU-IIT Octava Shines with 3rd Place Finish at NAMCYA Nationals

Iligan Ensemble Earns National Podium Finish

The MSU-IIT Octava Choral Society has reinforced Iligan’s presence on the national cultural stage after capturing 3rd Prize in the Senior Choir Category of NAMCYA 2025 “Kanta ’ta!” at the historic Metropolitan Theater in Manila.

Competing against nine other leading choirs from different regions, Octava impressed judges and audiences with its blend of precision, musicality, and expressive performance, securing its place among the country’s top choral ensembles.

  • Competition: 52nd NAMCYA “Kanta ’ta!” National Finals
  • Category: Senior Choir
  • Date and Venue: November 22, 2025, Metropolitan Theater, Manila
  • Result: 3rd Prize for MSU-IIT Octava Choral Society

Second Prize was awarded to the DLSU–Dasmariñas Chorale and the Liturgikon Vocal Ensemble for their standout performances in the same category.

Mindanaoan Choral Artistry on the National Stage

The 24-member Octava ensemble performed under the direction of choirmaster and artistic director Ernesto “Bajo” Zaldua Jr., whose leadership guided the group through the rigorous preparation and competition process.

Their success reflects a wider mission to:

  • Elevate Mindanaoan choral artistry in national platforms
  • Uphold and celebrate Filipino musical heritage
  • Inspire young artists from Iligan and across Mindanao to pursue excellence in the performing arts

Institutional and local government support played a crucial role. The Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology, led by Chancellor Atty. Alizedney M. Ditucalan, LLD, provided vital backing throughout the ensemble’s NAMCYA journey. The City Government of Iligan likewise extended key assistance that strengthened Octava’s preparations and participation.

Together, these partnerships underscore how coordinated support from academe and local government can help Mindanao-based talents gain recognition on national stages.

Support Iligan and Mindanao’s Rising Musical Talent

Residents, alumni, and music advocates are encouraged to continue supporting MSU-IIT Octava Choral Society and other local ensembles as they represent Iligan and Mindanao in future cultural events and competitions. Continued encouragement, sponsorships, and audience engagement will help sustain a vibrant choral community and open more opportunities for young Mindanaoan artists.
